She wants to be heard. She wants a voice.
This week I read an article in our church bulletin’s newly created ladies column about a woman’s place in the church.
She was upset that a preacher had given a sermon saying women could pick up trash at the church he supposed, but not much else. She was perhaps rightfully upset. Although, I found her comment that she was surprised the preacher wasn’t stoned by the audience disturbing.
When I hear women preaching on television in a Church setting I usually turn the channel. I wonder if God thinks to himself what is this bleating I hear in my ears. With many women speakers of great notoriety such as Joyce Meyers and Victoria Osteen just to name a few what does God really think about women preaching and what is their place in church?
You may if you choose read 1 Corinthians 14:34-38. If men are allowed to be ignorant are women also? This is my stance on women preaching and their role in the Church. And I believe it’s purpose is two-fold. It maintains familial order placing the man as the spiritual head of the family. It also makes a woman’s eternal judgment easier if she will honor God’s vision.
1 Samuel 15:14 KJV And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
This was Samuel’s response to Saul when Saul did what he wanted to do and kept the spoil rather than follow God’s instruction. Samuel continues in 1 Samuel 15:22-23 KJV And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord ? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord , he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Women want to speak and to be influential in the church. Here’s how.
1 Timothy 2:11-13 KJV Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
Women teaching women or children in the Church setting is a tradition of man. It is not a tradition of God.
1 Corinthians 11:5-6 KJV But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
The Amish and Mennonites get this right, but do they cover their heads simply for traditions sake. Ladies keep in mind a simple scarf works.
1 Peter 3:3-4 KJV Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
Isnt this good news? Quit worrying about make-up and how you appear to others so much.
The woman in the Church bulletin cited this verse as do many woman who want to talk or preach. Acts 18:26 KJV And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them , and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
Did they teach during church hours or even at the church? It sounds to me that perhaps they invited Apollos home for lunch and spent considerable time teaching him about Christ.
The Bible does say women can teach. Titus 2:4-5 KJV That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
The request therefore of God appears to be that women teach not at church, but at home or elsewhere in their daily lives. They can teach by example, speech, and lifestyle as also can men.
As a woman do you want to do what you want or what God asks of you?
